Pitbulls Facts Over Fiction

Pitbull Facts Over Fiction

Good evening, boy it has been a while since my last post. Just decided to speak on a topic that is highly recommended and contradictory. I will list a couple of questions followed by some facts and my personal opinion. Well let's get to these questions and at the end of the post will be a freebie download on " How to find the right dog breed for your lifestyle. Okay, Let's go!

What is a pitbull?

A class of dog that includes the breeds: American Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, and other combinations.

What is the pit bulls' history?

The history of pitbulls goes back to England. They were used in a sport called bull-baiting. In the early 1800's, the bulldog was developed into a muscular dog with strong jaw strength. Yet, in 1885 bull-baiting was banned and owners used their dogs in the sport "ratting." Wagers were made on what dogs could kill a certain amount of rats in a certain amount of time. The AKC formed in 1884, rejected pitbulls as a breed due to the fact most were used in dog fighting. Dog fighting as of today is banned in the U.S., but underground places have been discovered. The United Kennel Club in 1898 finally recognized this as the pit bull breed.

Why do I always hear about pitbulls in the news?

It's sad to say that the so called "Pit bull" controversy is over 30 years old. If you live in certain communities and have a pit bull, or a pitbull mix you would have to rehome your dog or lose your home. I find it stereotypical that pitbulls will be the first on the news, but that golden retriever that bit your neighbor isn't talked about. A good example would be those 2 rottweilers in New York that attacked a young boy downtown. I read about it myself, but seriously doubt that since Pitbull wasn't attached to the media people don't speak on it.

Can pitbulls turn on their owners?

Well, I can say yes, but also say that any breed of dog can too. I have watched Caesar Milan on T.V, and he deals with lots of dog breeds. He is a great trainer and has been bit from tiny Chihuahuas to Big Great Danes with an attitude. Now, I do have a true story of a lady that didn't live far from me who was attacked and actually killed by a pitbull. I am not saying this to freak any of my readers out but would like to point out something. The woman saw an ad online, she liked what she saw and inquired about this dog. I will leave the points she missed when inquiring in red.

This is an unneutered large male pitbull.

The dog stayed outside in a kennel and was told the owners didn't have time for him.

The dog wasn't social and labeled bad with dogs.

The dog wasn't too fond of crates.

The owners agreed to drop off the dog to the woman's home.

Okay, do you see anything wrong with the points made in red? This dog is loaded into the owner's car, and literally dropped off to a complete stranger's home. This is a complete no-no!

Not even a month after this woman had the dog she was attacked. She went into his kennel to simply clean it up. She was, I believe, to put the dog up, so she can clean his kennel out. The dog attacked her and literally killed her! The year I found out I felt bad for her and her family, but also wished more people would take the time to understand what really went wrong. Please people, do your research. Watch for certain behaviors past or present. Be cautious. This isn't just for pitbulls, but all breeds of dogs in general.

   5. Do pitbulls bite more than other dog breeds?

In my opinion, no. Any dog, whether big or small, is capable of biting. My dog bit me and she is a 4 lb Chihuahua. Broke the skin and literally caught me way off guard! I have a mark on my left hand as a battle scar to prove it. I know you would think, why just get rid of her? As a dog trainer, groomer, and breeder I recognized my mistake. She was pregnant, it was feeding time, and well… some pregnant dogs can be like pregnant people. Hormones, mood swings and the like. This dog was also my husband's road dog, and best fur baby. Okay back to the pit bulls. What the media says about pitbulls in my opinion is a 50-50 split. I have 2 female pitbulls, one is pure Pit, the other is a 90/10 split, 90% Staffordshire bull terrier, the other 10% is pit bull terrier. Both are complete love bugs. They are always willing to play, yet my Staffordshire has a lot of drive. I will discuss what drive really is in another blog post. In my next post, I will be discussing what an American bully is, and why they are a popular breed in itself.
